Training to achieve an Outcome

Training programs are of no use unless they are designed to produce a specified outcome.

While a desired outcome may not be that difficult to state, understanding why it is desirable and then knowing how to design the training program or set to achieve that outcome is critical.

Each of the sub-headings on this page take you directly to the material described in the short summary below each of the types of training.

SPRINT-USRPT: TRAINING FOR 50-m RACES

This publication by Brent S Rushall, PhD focuses on ultra-short race-pace interval training (USRPT) and contains technical analysis material and recommendations on both swimming technique and USRPT conditioning.  While the overall focus is on sprinting, the sections on starts, underwater and on the surface techniques are highly relevant and generally transferrable to all aspects of swimming coaching and training. The publication includes sections on performance psychology and the design of USRPT training sets.

HIGH INGTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING

Designing training programs is an art based on science and applied on the basis of the coaches experience and the nature of the swimmer. Much can go wrong. The development of a scientific understanding of what is required in designing High Intensity Training is therefore very necessary. The article, published by Swim Science, provides a great basis for developing your understanding for the the design of high intensity training sessions.
