What is the story behind the coat of arms used by mywaterworld.life?
The coat of arms used by mywaterworld.life is the “Ślepowron”. It is the coat of arms of the Sługocki family.
The Ślepowron is unique in Polish heraldry as it indicates a common family ancestor. Over the centuries one of the descendants ended up in Tasmania. The use of this coat of arms honors that history and journey of that descendant’s travel and arrival in Tasmania.
Maciej’s father Adam was from Lwow in the east of pre-WWII Poland. Adam’s journey from there to Australia commenced in 1939 following the invasion of Poland, firstly by the Germans and 17 days later by the Russian communist Red Army. Having fought in the middle east and then flown as a navigator with the PAF/RAF Adam ended up in the highlands of Tasmania. All the while, his signet ring travelled him and is now worn by his son Maciej (but only on special occasions because he worries about losing it).
The earliest historical mention of the Ślepowron coat of arms dates back to the 13th century during the Piast dynasty’s rule of Poland, itself dating back to 960 CE. From the 15th century onwards descendants of the original Ślepowron” family” began using names of the lands they owned as their family names. Where the Sługockis of antiquity owned land is not known but that is where, in the Ślepowron family pantheon, the Sługocki family has its roots.
The coat of arms includes a number of elements one of which is the raven. This, according to historians, dates back to Marcus Valerius Messalla Corvinus (64BC-8AD). The family’s origins are buried in this antiquity and the fascinating linkages of the coat of arms are entwined with European history.
