Sub 20sec 50 Freestyle Short Course? [updated]

After the song was sung (swim was swum) and after a few attempts the fastest time was 20.41 was the best he could manage.

This was great promotion for our sport by Speedo. The 8 minute clip is worth watching for both the visuals, slo-mo included, and Caeleb’s comments on the technical adjustments he needed to make.

It seems that , this time at least, the suit didn’t make the swimmer.

Friday 11 December 4:00 am ( Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time Caeleb Dressel, the USA swimming sensation, will swim 50m in a Speedo Fastskin 2008 LZR.

HOW FAST WILL HE GO IN THIS THROWBACK SUIT?

Caeleb is the current World Short Course 50meter record holder, having set a time of 20.16  seconds on 21 November at the International Swimming League 2020 season finals at the Duna Arena in Budapest.

You can watch Caeleb’s attempt on the Speedo International YouTube channel. His attack on the 50m time is scheduled for 09:00 am Thursday 10 December Pacific Standard Time (USA). Of course the time won’t count even if he goes under 20 secs. He will be making the attempt in a type of suit that, under FINA introduced rules, is not legal to compete in.

International travel and vaccine requirements

With the rollout of vaccines having now commenced, some of us are starting to think and dream about international travel in 2021 and events that we may be able to compete at (not as if there are many available at the moment).

Lonely Planet (LP ) published an article on 5 December 2020 titled ” Will I have to get a COVID vaccine before I travel in 2021?” This article discusses possible scenarios for international travel and offers some advice on the types of documentation you may need before you travel.

John Walton, the LP writer observes that “as you prepare to get vaccinated — and, barring any medical reason you should probably discuss with your doctor, you should — it’s important to realise that some airlines and governments are likely to require proof. And, especially if you’re early on the priority list before systems are put in place, that may mean you need to take the initiative and be prepared for some thoroughly unglamorous paperwork.”

If you are planning any international travel there is no time better than now to read John’s article from here.

Virtual Covid 2020 Polish Masters Swimming Championships (unofficial)

Huge congratulations to Gosia Serbin, a Polish masters swimmer, who took it upon herself to organise an unofficial 2020 Masters Swimming Championship for Poland following their cancellation.

Great to see such an initiative by Gosia.  It would be fantastic to see meets like this being staged in other parts of the world (not saying that there aren’t).

Now is the time for national, regional and local masters organisations to do the same.  Masters swimmers are crying out for incentives to train and the staging of virtual competitions provides just that incentive.

Well done to all of those Polish masters who took part in those virtual championships and they now have something quite unique to remember this meet by.  Podium finishers were all eligible to claim a unique medal and certificate. A commemorative participation medal for all other competitors was also made available by Gosia Serbin.
